4th Edition of ConSIMium: Six Spanish University Students Take Part in an EU Council Simulation in Brussels

Brussels, 6 February 2025. Six Spanish university students, selected by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), took part on 5 and 6 February in the fourth edition of ConSIMium, a simulation initiative organised by the Council of the European Union. Held in Brussels, the event brought together teams from all 27 EU Member States and enabled students to gain first-hand insight into how negotiations are conducted and decisions are taken at European level.

ConSIMium offers a practical introduction to the functioning of the European Union and to EU policymaking and legislative processes. During the exercise, the European Commission and the Presidency of the Council assumed their real institutional roles, faithfully replicating standard working dynamics and procedures.

The Spanish team was composed of Marina Gutiérrez Martínez (University of Cantabria), Eduardo Draganinsky Ardoy (CEU San Pablo University), Sergio Torres Alfonso (Complutense University of Madrid), Carmen Peragón Ortega (University of Jaén), Moritz Dellafior (Miguel Hernández University of Elche) and Camila Maria Delmar Lalalnne (Pompeu Fabra University).

The Spanish delegation was coordinated by Alberto Conejero, Vice-Rector for Students and Entrepreneurship at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and member of the Executive Committee of Crue–Student Affairs, who accompanied the group throughout the two working days in Brussels and guided their preparatory work.

The fourth edition of ConSIMium brought together nearly 200 students from the 27 Member States of the European Union. Each team, made up of six students and a national coordinator, took part in meetings replicating the different stages of the EU decision-making process, including the European Council, specialised working groups, the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) and a ministerial session.

ConSIMium provides university students with a valuable opportunity to gain practical insight into the functioning of the EU Council and the complexities of European negotiations, strengthening both their academic training and their engagement with the European project.
