CRUE Reaffirms Its Commitment to Memory and Democratic Values on the European Day for Victims of Terrorism

Madrid, 11 March 2026. On the European Day for Victims of Terrorism, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) pays tribute to all victims and once again expresses its solidarity with their families. Their memory forms part of the collective commitment to freedom, the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights.

This day calls upon the university community to preserve a rigorous memory and to reinforce, through education and knowledge, the principles that underpin our democratic society. Universities, as spaces for education and critical thinking, reject all forms of violence and promote dialogue and respect as the foundations of coexistence.

This year also marks the thirtieth anniversary of the assassination of Francisco Tomás y Valiente, Professor of History of Law and former President of the Constitutional Court of Spain, at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid on 14 February 1996. His academic and institutional career symbolises a commitment to the constitutional order and to public responsibility exercised from within the university.

CRUE reaffirms the responsibility of Spanish universities to transmit these values to new generations. Keeping this commitment alive is a task shared by the entire university community and contributes to consolidating a civic culture based on respect, pluralism and the rule of law.
