Crue Seminar «Universities: Excellence with a soul»

Santander, September 8 and 9, 2022. Crue Universidades Españolas organises the seminar «Universities: Excellence with a soul», within the framework of the summer courses of the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP), on September 8 and 9. This forum, directed by the member of Crue’s Standing Committee and Rector of the Universidad de Huelva, María Antonia Peña, aims to «reflect on the need for change or evolution from a teaching and research university» to another that also «promotes a true and positive transformation of society», that is committed to a comprehensive education in values.

Crue points out that in the 21st century, the best universities are showing a clear concern for a broader social vision of their missions and a greater commitment to the so-called knowledge society. Moreover, they are contributing to social change that is not based solely on economic terms, and that takes into account the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In addition to this is the European Union’s commitment to a transformative, fair, inclusive and sustainable recovery that leaves no one behind. For this reason, in an increasingly global world, and after two severe crises so far this century, it is more than timely to reflect and debate on some of the issues that today constitute a clear concern on the social agenda and on how Universities can promote this transformation from a condition of «excellent institutions with a soul».

During two days, roundtables and debates will be held on society and values, equal opportunities, universities and their commitment to the rural world, people-centered economy, academic freedom and internationalisation with a multicultural vision. Representatives of public bodies, foundations and entities from the business world or universities will participate in these discussions.

In addition, Adela Cortina, Emeritus Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the University of Valencia, will give the opening lecture on the first day, and Prof. Michael Murphy, President of the European University Association (EUA), will be in charge of the keynote address on Friday 9th September.
